...Also, my family was not feeling the blogging idea--they'd rather I tell them things over the phone. That would work, if it weren't for the fact that the only times I'm generally free when I have school are at 2 in the morning before I go to bed. Whatever, they will catch up with the rest of the world and its obsessions with the Internet soon enough. I figure I'll be able to keep this for any of my many adventures in the future--I really want to be able to go to the West Coast this summer for a job, and then a blog will be necessary for my friends from home, all of whom will be scattered throughout the country.
It has been a crazy semester. A bad break up, a rejected concentration proposal, and an entirely new set of friends have all combined to make this an unforgettable point in my life. Winter break was a welcome relief, and as this was the first break I've had since 9th grade where I wasn't working a job, it was the first real vacation I've had since middle school. I only half-heartedly looked for a temporary job; I knew the recession wasn't going to supply me with much, and lo and behold, the job offer I had was snatched away at the last minute. No surprises there, that's how my attempted summer at home had been.
So now I've been resting and relaxing at my parents', sleeping in a bit, cooking, reading, applying to summer internships, and working on my concentration declaration forms (Cognitive Science; as I stated before, my independent concentration was rejected. My choices were to work on resubmitting all Winter Break and potentially get rejected again, not hearing back from the Committee until mid-March, so that I would waste an entire semester of credits, or to declare something "on the menu." They make it really difficult to pass an independent concentration at Brown, and once it does become accepted, there is little to no support given to you. You're entirely on your own, and while I feel like that is my case a good portion of the time, at least I can be sort of taken care of by a department occassionally.).
Of course, being home means being with my best friends in the world. Yesterday, Amanda and Christian left, and they were the last ones here with me. Rachel's school, RIT, works in quarters, so she was gone very early. Katelyn got the RA job (I'm sorry, "House Proctor" job--GW is weird...) so she also went back early. But we all had great times here while we were together, and I always forget how much I miss them until I see them again. Luckily, I still have Honor, who was on vacation in Florida for the last week but is coming back today, and Tom Lee and his friend Maria (who I just met last night and is really cool). I'm pretty excited to hang out with them. I've also reconnected with an old friend I haven't seen in two and a half years, but I'm not so sure we have as much in common as I thought we did.
I had a bunch of goals for this break, like teaching myself Java or Python, but I knew it wasn't going to happen. I'll just learn Matlab and C over the next semester in CS4 and hopefully find the time to teach myself other languages over the summer. Tom Lee is teaching himself Russian through YouTube. How cool is that? I want to strengthen my Spanish (it could always use work), so I set my Facebook to Spanish so that I'm forced to read Spanish constantly (as I'm always on Facebook!)
This has been a good break. I really don't want it to end!
